A jjimjilbang (찜질방) is a Korean public bathhouse + sauna + sleeping room hybrid. Open 24h, ₩10-20k for entry, used by Koreans for everything from hangover recovery to overnight budget stays. Foreigner-friendly when you know the rules. Here's how to walk in without being That Tourist.
| Area | What it is |
|---|---|
| Mogyoktang 목욕탕. bathhouse | Gender-segregated. Fully naked. Hot tubs, cold plunge, scrub-down area, sauna. The traditional Korean public bath. |
| Jjimjilbang 찜질방. sauna lounge | Co-ed. Wear the provided uniform (T-shirt + shorts, color-coded by gender). Themed sauna rooms (jade, charcoal, salt, ice), sleeping areas, snack bar, sometimes PC room or massage chairs. |
Most venues offer both. You can do just the bathhouse, just the co-ed sauna, or both. the entry fee usually covers everything.
Pay at the front desk, get a wristband + locker key
₩10-20k typical. The wristband locks/unlocks your locker and tracks any in-house spending (snack bar, massage); pay on the way out.
Shoes off → shoe locker
Right at the entrance. Use the small locker near the door, keep that key with the wristband.
Change in the gender-segregated locker room
Strip down, store everything. From here you have two paths: into the bathhouse (naked), or change into the provided uniform for the co-ed jjimjilbang.
Bathhouse rules (if you go in)
Shower fully before entering any tub. Sit at one of the low stools, scrub down with the provided soap + shower head. Then hot tub → cold plunge → sauna in any order. No phones, no underwear, no bathing suits.
Co-ed jjimjilbang in uniform
T-shirt + loose shorts. Wander between sauna rooms (each has a different theme. jade, charcoal, salt, ice). Sleep on the heated floor. Eat a hard-boiled egg + sikhye (sweet rice drink) at the snack bar. that's the canonical pairing.
Exit, pay, return uniform
Tap your wristband at the front desk, pay any extras, return the uniform to the bin. Total time: 90 min minimum, easy 3-4 hours, optional overnight.
